The Reindeer belong to The Wind

 This 39-minute documentary film gives a voice to the Käsivarsi reindeer herding co-operative members. They describe in their own words what threats their traditional livelihood is facing in modern times.

 The narrator Sámi actress Anni-Kristiina Juuso invites the audience to her own community in Enontekiö. She was awarded with several  international awards for roles in films Cuckoo (Russia) and Kautokeino  Rebellion (Norway).

 The Reindeer belong to The Wind film had its premiere at Skábmagovat film festival in January 2016 at Cultural Center Siida in Inari, Lapland. And the following day at Edge of Ice festival in Helsinki. Anni-Kristiina Juuso was present at both screenings for a Q&A session.

In 2016 the film was screened e.g. at:

  • Sámi national day celebrations 6.2.2016 in Enontekiö at Tunturi-Lappi Nature Center
  • Savonlinna International Nature Film Festival in August 2016. Researcher Heta Heiskanen and director Päivi Kapiainen-Heiskanen were  
    present for a Q&A session.
  • Rauma Blue Sea film festival in August 2016. Anni-Kristiina Juuso was invited to attend the screening and answer questions at a separate  
    Q&A session.
  • Wildlife Vaasa International film festival 30.9.2016. Heta Heiskanen and Päivi Kapiainen-Heiskanen were present. The 3rd runner up / Best  
    Nordic films.
  • Native Spirit film festival at the University of London, UK,  13.10.2016. A Q&A session with Ms Pirita Näkkäläjärvi and Mr  
    Oula-Antti Labba who volunteered to answer questions related to the  sámi culture in Finland.
  • University of Tampere 30.9.2016. A Q&A session with researchers Irja Seurujärvi-Kari and Heta Heiskanen.
  • Elo & Kuva film festival in Mäntyharju 4.11.2016. A Q&A session with director Päivi Kapiainen-Heiskanen.
  • Tunturilatu ry 70 years in Laukaa at Peurunka center 6.11.2016. A  Q&A with director Päivi Kapiainen-Heiskanen.
  • Sunrise film festival in Nova Scotia, Canada. Director Päivi Kapiainen-Heiskanen present thanks to a travel grant from AVEK. The  
    best international film.

In addition, there has been screenings at schools and universities, at  workshops of various international projects and at Siida cultural  
center in Inari. This document film can also been seen offline at  Artikum library in Rovaniemi.

The documentary was completed during the Would you like to taste  environmental conflict project. This one-year project was coordinated  
by Leena Heinämäki at the University of Lapland Arctic Center. Partner universities were the University of Tampere and Helsinki. The project  
was funded By Kone Foundation (Koneen Säätiö).

Translator Jaana Kuorinka translated the film into English. The translation was fudned by AVEK - The Promotion Center for Audiovisual Culture in Finland.
